Two different Verizon connections, two different expectations
"Verizon internet" usually means one of two genuinely different technologies, and it matters which one you have before judging a speed test result:
- Verizon Fios is a fiber-optic connection run directly to the home, mainly available in parts of the Northeastern United States. Fiber connections typically deliver very consistent speeds close to their advertised rating, in both download and upload, because each home gets its own dedicated fiber line rather than sharing local capacity the way cable does.
- Verizon 5G Home Internet / LTE Home Internet is fixed wireless: it uses Verizon's cellular network, received by a router in your home, instead of a cable or fiber line. Its available footprint is much wider than Fios, but speeds can vary more with distance from the nearest cell tower, local network congestion, and even weather, in a way a fiber connection generally doesn't.
What typically affects Verizon speed test results
Depending on which Verizon service you have, different things tend to matter most:
- On Fios (fiber): results should be close to your plan's advertised speed most of the time, in both directions. Fios plans are commonly symmetric (equal download and upload), unlike most cable plans. A result well below your plan on a wired connection is more unusual on fiber and more worth investigating than a similar gap would be on cable.
- On 5G/LTE Home Internet: router placement relative to a window (fixed wireless routers generally do better near a window facing the direction of the nearest cell site), local cell tower congestion at peak times, and physical obstructions between your home and the tower can all noticeably affect the result, closer to how mobile phone signal behaves than how a wired connection behaves.
- On both: wifi distance and interference inside the home still apply exactly as they would with any other provider: a device on wifi across the house will usually test slower than the same device wired directly to the router.
Getting the most accurate reading on Verizon
A few practical steps make a Verizon speed test result more trustworthy, whichever service you have:
- Connect the test device directly to your router with an ethernet cable if possible, to remove wifi as a variable.
- For 5G/LTE Home Internet specifically, avoid moving the router between tests: position matters, and comparing results after moving the router isn't a fair before/after comparison.
- Pause other downloads, cloud backups, or streaming on the same network while the test runs.
- Run the test a few times at different times of day, since both congestion (cable/5G) and, less often, maintenance windows (fiber) can cause temporary dips.
When to contact Verizon support
On Fios, a consistently low wired result well below your plan's advertised speed is worth reporting. Fiber connections don't normally have the kind of built-in variability that cable or fixed wireless do. On 5G/LTE Home Internet, some variability is expected, but a result that stays poor after trying different router placement and times of day is also worth a support call. Before calling, note a few test results with date, time, and whether you were on ethernet or wifi. Verizon also publishes a service status page, worth checking first if speeds drop suddenly across the whole household.
