How this speed test works

Most of what people call an "internet speed" is really four separate numbers, and this tool measures all four:

How the test is measured

We built this tool from scratch on Cloudflare's edge network (the same infrastructure Cloudflare's own speed test runs on) rather than reusing anyone else's paid API, so there is no third-party service in the loop. The test runs in four stages:

  1. Ping: your browser sends six quick, empty requests to our server and times each round trip. The first is discarded (it usually includes some one-time connection setup overhead), and the remaining five are used to calculate your ping (the middle, or median, value) and jitter (the average change between consecutive pings).
  2. Download: your browser downloads a stream of data from our server in increasing chunks, starting at 1 MB. If that finishes in under two seconds, the test moves up to 5 MB, then 10 MB, then 25 MB, so a fast connection gets measured accurately without waiting around, and a slow connection isn't forced to sit through a 25 MB download it doesn't need.
  3. Upload: the same escalating-size approach, but in reverse: your browser generates a chunk of random data and sends it to our server, which confirms how many bytes it received.
  4. Result: your download and upload speeds are calculated from the total bytes transferred divided by the total time taken across every stage that actually ran, not just a single sample, which is a more representative number than one quick snapshot.

What is a good internet speed?

"Good" depends entirely on what you're doing and how many devices share the connection at once. This table shows roughly what each activity needs. Treat it as a planning guide, not a hard cutoff; most things still work below these numbers, just less comfortably:

Why download and upload speeds are usually different

On most home internet plans (cable, DSL, and even a lot of fiber and 5G Home Internet plans), the advertised download speed is much higher than the advertised upload speed. A common example is a plan sold as "300 Mbps" that actually means roughly 300 Mbps download and only 10-20 Mbps upload. This is called an asymmetric connection, and it's a deliberate design choice, not a fault: most home internet use is download-heavy (loading webpages, streaming video, downloading files), so providers allocate more of the available capacity to download.

What is a speed test, exactly?
A speed test measures how fast data can travel between your device and a server on the internet, in both directions, plus how long a single round trip takes. It sends and receives sample data over a short period and reports the results as download speed and upload speed (both in Mbps, meaning megabits per second), along with ping and jitter (both in milliseconds). It's a snapshot of your connection's performance at that exact moment, not a permanent measurement of your plan.
What is a good internet speed test result?
It depends on what you use the connection for and how many people share it. As a rough guide: 5-10 Mbps download is fine for browsing and email, 25 Mbps or more is commonly recommended for a single 4K stream, and for gaming or video calls a low, stable ping (under roughly 50 ms) and low jitter matter more than a high download number. Why do internet speed tests vary so much between runs?
Because so many things can change between two test runs: wifi signal strength, how many other devices are using the connection at that moment, time-of-day network congestion in your area, whether a VPN is active, and which server the test happens to measure against. None of that means the test is broken; it means a connection's real-world performance genuinely fluctuates, and a single test result is a snapshot, not a guarantee.
Why is my internet slow but the speed test shows a fast result?
A speed test measures raw throughput between your device and a server; it doesn't measure everything that can make a website or app feel slow. A slow-loading website can be caused by that specific website's own servers being overloaded, DNS lookup delays, an outdated device, background apps competing for bandwidth, or the far end of the connection (the site or service you're using) rather than your internet connection itself. A fast, clean speed test result is a good sign your connection into the internet is healthy, even if one particular website or app is still slow for reasons on its end.
Are internet speed tests accurate?
A speed test measures your connection accurately for the specific moment and specific path it tested (your device to that server and back), but it can't measure every possible path or moment. Testing at different times of day, on wifi vs. a wired connection, and comparing results against your plan's advertised speed all give a more complete picture than relying on a single test result.
What does ping mean on a speed test?
Ping is the round-trip time, in milliseconds, for a small packet of data to travel from your device to a server and back. A lower number means less delay. Ping matters most for anything that needs to feel instant: online gaming, video calls, and voice chat, where even a small delay is noticeable. Download and upload speed, by contrast, mostly affect how fast larger amounts of data move, not how quickly a single action responds.
How do I get the most accurate speed test result?
Close other apps and browser tabs that might be using bandwidth in the background, pause any downloads or cloud backups, ask other people on the same network to pause heavy usage during the test, and if possible connect the testing device directly to your router with an ethernet cable rather than over wifi. Running the test a few times at different times of day also gives a more realistic picture than a single run.
