What a speed test actually sends and receives

Running the test on this site makes a series of requests to two endpoints on our own server:

• /api/down: your browser downloads a stream of randomly generated data (up to 25 MB per request) so we can time how fast it arrives. This data has no meaning beyond its size. It isn't a file, a document, or anything tied to you.
• /api/up: your browser uploads a similarly generated block of random data, which our server counts and immediately discards. We don't store, log, inspect, or retain the content of what's uploaded.

What we don't collect

Running a speed test does not require, and does not create, an account. We don't ask for your name, email address, or any contact details to use the tool. We don't set tracking cookies, build an advertising profile, or sell any data. There simply isn't a data-collection step built into the test itself beyond the timing measurement that produces your result.

What is processed, briefly, to make the site work

Like any website, some technical information is necessarily visible to our hosting infrastructure (Cloudflare) as part of serving any request over the internet: for example your IP address is used momentarily to apply rate limiting (a technical safeguard that stops a single connection from being used to hammer the download/upload endpoints for free bandwidth, described in more detail below). This is a standard, low-level part of how any website responds to requests, not a profile built about you, and it isn't paired with your speed test result in any record we keep.

Rate limiting, explained

The /api/down and /api/up endpoints are limited to 30 requests per minute per IP address. This exists purely to stop the download/upload endpoints from being abused as a free, unlimited data-transfer service (unrelated to the actual speed-test feature). It does not store a history of your visits, just a short-lived counter used to apply the limit in the moment.

Optional feedback

If a feedback option is available on a page (a thumbs up/down, or a short comment box), using it is entirely optional and anonymous: no email address, account, or identifying information is attached to a vote or message. See the feedback control itself, where present, for the same explanation.

Cookies and browser storage

This site does not use tracking or advertising cookies. Your browser's theme preference (light or dark mode) is remembered locally on your own device using standard browser storage, so it doesn't need to be re-selected on every visit. This setting never leaves your device or gets sent to our server. No other preference, result, or identifier is stored in your browser by this site.

Third-party infrastructure

This site runs on Cloudflare's infrastructure, which serves every request (including the speed-test measurement itself) and provides the rate-limiting safeguard described above. Using Cloudflare's network is what makes the speed test possible in the first place: it's the same infrastructure the download and upload endpoints run on, not a separate analytics or advertising service layered on top of the site. We don't embed third-party advertising scripts, third-party analytics trackers, or social media widgets on this site.

Do Not Track and similar browser signals

Because this site doesn't set tracking cookies or build a cross-site profile in the first place, a browser's "Do Not Track" or Global Privacy Control signal doesn't change how the site behaves. There is no tracking to turn off. The site works identically whether or not such a signal is sent.

Children's privacy

This site is a general-audience utility tool and does not knowingly collect personal information from anyone, including children. Since running a speed test requires no account, email address, or personal details from any visitor, there is no age-specific data-collection concern built into how the tool works.

Changes to this policy

If what this site collects or how it works changes meaningfully in the future, this page will be updated to reflect that. There is no mailing list or notification system. Checking back here is the way to see the current version.

Why the speed test doesn't need an account

Some online tools ask for an account so they can save a history of your past results, or so they can build a broader dataset by tying results to a specific person or household over time. This site deliberately doesn't do either: the test is designed to answer one question (how fast is my connection right now) and nothing more, so there's no feature here that would benefit from knowing who you are, and therefore no reason to ask.
