About TM and Unifi
TM (Telekom Malaysia) is Malaysia's national telecommunications provider, and Unifi is its consumer broadband brand. Unifi is fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) service, delivered over a dedicated fibre-optic line to each home rather than shared cable or copper. TM's older DSL broadband service, Streamyx, was fully discontinued in February 2025, with remaining customers migrated onto Unifi fibre, so if your home has TM internet today, it's almost certainly running over Unifi's fibre network rather than the older copper-based Streamyx service.
What typically affects a Unifi speed test result
Because Unifi is a fibre connection, results tend to be more consistent than cable or DSL, but a few things still matter:
- Wifi vs. a wired connection. Fibre brings a fast connection to the router in your home, but from there wifi still has to travel through walls and furniture: a device tested on wifi in a room far from the router will usually read lower than the same device wired directly to the router with an ethernet cable.
- Plan tier. Unifi is sold in several speed tiers, so the meaningful comparison is your result against the specific plan you subscribe to, not the fastest tier Unifi offers overall. Check your plan details in your TM Unifi account or latest bill.
- Router capability. The router TM provides (or a customer-owned router, where used) needs to support the full speed of your plan, particularly over wifi: an older router or one set to an older wifi standard can become the bottleneck even when the fibre line itself is delivering full speed to the router.
- Local network conditions. While fibre is generally more consistent than cable, brief slowdowns can still happen during network maintenance windows or unusually high local demand, similar to any provider's network.
Getting the most accurate reading on TM Unifi
A few practical steps make a Unifi speed test result more trustworthy:
- Connect the test device directly to your router with an ethernet cable if possible, to remove wifi as a variable entirely.
- Pause other downloads, cloud backups, or streaming on the same network while the test runs.
- Run the test a few times at different times of day rather than relying on a single result.
- Compare both the download AND upload numbers against your actual Unifi plan. Many Unifi fibre plans offer speeds that are closer to symmetric (similar download and upload) than cable or DSL plans typically are, so a large upload/download gap is more worth double-checking against your specific plan details than simply assuming it's normal.
When to contact TM support
A consistently low result, well below your Unifi plan's advertised speed, on a wired connection, checked at more than one time of day, is worth reporting to TM. Before contacting support, it helps to have a few test results noted with date and time, whether each was wired or wifi, and your plan's advertised speed. TM also publishes service status information, worth checking first if speeds drop suddenly across the whole household rather than declining gradually.
